Here's some more background on us from our previous web site:
The Houston Harpies are a developmental women's ice hockey team. What does that mean exactly? Good question. It means that we:

Give all women the opportunity to learn to play hockey in a supportive environment where you can grow at your own pace.

We're on to you - we know all of your excuses for not playing hockey. Here's what we say:

I can't skate. GREAT! Seriously - it doesn't matter. One of the team's mottos is "Skills are optional." We want you to come out with no expectations of being good and to play with women who have been exactly where you are today.

I'm out of shape. GREAT! Seriously - it doesn't matter. One of your teammates has had open heart surgery. Beat that!

I'm too old. GET REAL! We've had grandmothers playing on our team. Guess what, they didn't learn to skate untill after they were grandmothers! If they can do it, so can you.

I don't have any gear, and I can't afford to buy it. GREAT! As a developmental team, we do our best to provide you with the tools you need to learn. Part of that is the ability to borrow equipment so that you can go ahead and play.

Hockey's too rough. You watch too much television and don't spend enough time on the ice :) Professional hockey is very rough but we are novices, and we play by different rules. Fighting and body checks are prohibited. Don't get us wrong, you might get pushed around, but you won't get taken to the cleaners, and nobody is going to try to hurt you. We all have day jobs that are very important to us, and we want to make sure we are able to go to work the next day.

We're serious, we want you to come out and play hockey with us. Watching from the stands and asking all sorts of questions is always free. And when you decide to come out and skate with us, your first time on the ice is free as well. No pressure, no long-term contracts, no commitment. Just a lot of good clean fun with women who want you to learn what ice hockey is all about. For more information contact one of the following team members:
